This project represents a conscious effort by the City of Galax to increase its flood awareness, flood preparedness, response to flooding, and ability to recover from flooding events. The plan strives to increase flood resiliency within the city by addressing threats to life and property from severe weather events, man-made and natural hazards, and climate change, specifically related to flooding.
The plan is a resource to the City of Galax. The plan represents a data source; it includes the most recent data available for assessing the city’s risk and vulnerability to flooding, as well as the city’s capability and capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from flooding. The plan is prepared utilizing the best available science and data. The plan represents a vision, including achievable goals, action steps, and funding mechanisms to implement the plan. The plan is designed with the purpose of being future focused and action focused.
The plan includes coordination with other local and inter-jurisdictional projects, plans, and activities and has a clearly articulated timeline or phasing for plan implementation. It is based on the best available science, and incorporates climate change, sea level rise, and current flood maps.
